I recently watched this new Jason Reitman film 'Men, Women and Children', I was intrigued by the concept of how it delved into how our lives have become so dependent upon social media, and that we're all voyeurs struggling to fit in, be accepted and be 'normal'.
The film stars many big Hollywood names with the likes of: Jennifer Garner (who plays an extremely over-protective mother; constantly spying on all her daughters online behaviour and intercepting anything she disagrees with), theres Adam Sandler (a horny, bored suburban dad) and there's even Emma Thompson who voices the narrative.
However, despite the deep underlying message and enough big actors that it could almost be more of a sinister spin off of Valentine's Day. The numerous story lines and plots, make it seem as though it should work and it should win your attention, yet it doesn't. It's almost as though the ambition was too high and as was the scope. The film attempts to cover and discuss issues of intimacy and sex in an era when the two are already confused, yet it fails, and does so with a chasteness that almost makes it comparable to the Twilight franchise.
The film is clever and there are parts which are relatable, especially as being an 18 year old girl brought up with the rise of technology and social media, yet the film almost knows it's being clever and it's in love with its cleverness, but in fact it's attempt to shoot for the stars just crashes back in pieces.
