Cake

So most recently in my spare (apart from doing uni work of course) I watched one of the highly talked about films of the year, Cake. The usually type-casted Friends-esque roles that Jennifer Anniston is more than often known for portraying, is a far far cry from this character.
In this film, Anniston transforms into a rather, understandably, cynically lonely woman struggling to cope with chronic pain. She irrationally begins to have hallucinations of a woman who committed suicide from her chronic pain support group, all whilst attempting to cope with her own tragedy.
The film itself is rather insightful, commenting and narrating around rather sensitive topics, yet, personally, it felt as though the story lost a bit depth after a while, almost dragging a little making the audience wait for something more to happen. However, it is undoubtable that this is an excellent performance by Anniston; I felt as though her portrayal was really moving and believable. Yet, because everyone is so used to seeing her in the same role time and time again, perhaps the main reason why this performance seems to spectacular is because it is ever so different.
None the less I do recommend this watch, it's definitely something different, yet not the lightest of films so perhaps pick your timing...
