Visual Critique Ideas

So for one of our briefs on my course, we have to chose a fashion photograph produced by one of the iconic fashion photographers: Richard Avedon, Guy Bourdin, Nick Knight, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, Helmut Newton, Mario Testino and Ellen Von Unwerth. The idea is to select one image and critically analysis it; discussing cultural references, relevant theory, the art direction, styling/props/makeup etc. To conclude your 1000 word analysis, one needs to debate whether the image actually works or not; looking at both positive and negative aspects.
The following are some images that I am thinking about choosing:

Malcolm X by Richard Avedon, New York, 1963.

Marilyn Monroe by Richard Avedon, 1957.

Both of these images are taken from the 'Face the Future' editorial in Italian Vogue by Steven Meisel, 2012.
